Governor Chamberlain would resign on February 28, 1909 after his election to the United States Senate. He was succeeded by Secretary of State Frank W. Benson. Due to Governor Benson's health issues, President of the Oregon Senate Jay Bowerman became acting governor in June 1910 and served the remainder of the term.
