About this Poll

A new poll shows one in three Democrats in West Virginia have not decided on a Democratic Presidential candidate.

Of those who say they have selected a candidate, 43% of the respondents back New York Senator Hillary Clinton, 22% of the respondents back Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

A total of 35% of the voters surveyed are undecided.

"It was surprising to me that it was that high because virtually all you've heard for three, four, five months is Clinton-Obama, Clinton-Obama and, yet, a little over a third of all West Virginia Democrats and Independents are undecided," says Mark Blankenship.

Mark Blankenship Enterprises released the results of the poll which was conducted between February Eighth and February 21st on Tuesday. It's the first poll of its kind for the 2008 election year.

Blankenship says it's a snapshot that shows the Obama Campaign has some work to do in West Virginia.

"Obama has a much tougher road to go down because he's got to get either two-thirds of that undecided vote to break his way or some combination. He's got to pull support away from Hillary and then pull some from the undecided vote," says Blankenship who was a guest on Tuesday's MetroNews Talkline.

State Democratic Party Chair Nick Casey says it's early in the election season for West Virginia. The state's Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th.

"That doesn't surprise me, when I see those numbers," says Casey. "What would be much more interesting to me is as we get closer to the primary, to see how much attention we get from the candidates and I think that'll impact those numbers one way or the other."

The poll included 405 registered Democrats and independents in West Virginia. It has a margin of error of 5%.
