Hezbollah has gone woke

How is that "woke"?
It's a joke. The word "woke" has lost any actual meaning a long time ago.

It actually had meaning?

Ceasefire to begin within 24 hours, 53 civilian hostages to be released in exchange for 159 female/child Palestinian prisoners, and five days of lull. The ceasefire can be extended by an additional 5 days if Hamas releases 50 more.

I highly doubt the ceasefire will actually last all five days, let alone ten.
It may not, but hopefully it will. 🙏

They never had as many crazy low-level ministers before, that's for sure - but also, the emotions around this war are very different from any other.

Are you really trying to both sides this? Bruh

And several ministers have called for ethnic cleansing, a minister called for a nuke, and now this bizarre mess. It's almost like the current Israeli administration is evil and we shouldn't fund them.

The "both sides" absurdity is that one side has slaughtered children in the worst antisemitic violence since the Holocaust, and the other side has some ministers who make disgusting statements on Twitter that have no chance of becoming policy.

At this point I think a majority of the Knesset has made a disgusting statement on Twitter.

Pretty clear that Israel is trying to maximize civilian casualties too. The end goal is the expulsion of all Gazans.

Some ministers are already saying other countries should take them in. There was a joint statement by Likud and YA MKs asking for this recently.

Of course not.

Netanyahu's cabinet is full of crazies. It's what happened after the last election when the only way he could form a stable government was to align with the extreme right. They'll be gone after the next election thankfully.

They should be demanding he leave now. His ineptitude is why this happened. The Brits had no problem throwing Chamberlain out during war time, why won't the Israelis here?

Israel's Minister of Communications suggesting to cut off the foreskins of Hamas fighters is incredible content, really. They should also burn all images of Allah in Gaza while they're at it. That will be a proper revenge.

Quote
Hm. This Seems Concerning:

Major General Giora Eiland, former head of the Israeli National Security Council:

"They are not only Hamas fighters with weapons, but also all the ‘civilian’ officials, including hospital administrators and school administrators, and also the entire Gaza population that enthusiastically supported Hamas and cheered on its atrocities on October 7th. …

Israel is not fighting a terrorist organization but against the State of Gaza. …

Who are the ‘poor’ women of Gaza? They are all the mothers, sisters or wives of Hamas murderers. …

The Israeli cabinet must take a harder line with the Americans, and at least have the ability to say the following: as long as all the hostages are not returned to Israel, do not talk to us about the humanitarian aspects. ...

The international community warns us of a humanitarian disaster in Gaza and of severe epidemics. We must not shy away from this, as difficult as that may be. After all, severe epidemics in the south of the Gaza Strip will bring victory closer and reduce casualties among IDF soldiers.”

Chamberlain was only thrown out after a failed intervention by the British and French on a secondary front (Norway).

If Israel also had a failed intervention on a secondary front (Lebanon, against Hezbollah), there is a good chance that it would similarly result in Netanyahu getting thrown out.

And not coincidentally, Netanyahu is aware of that, which is part of the reason why he has been against a pre-emptive strike against Hezbollah, even while some of his ministers supported it.

after the war concludes, perhaps the peace treaty should resemble the treaty of sevres and include population exchanges that settle demographic questions

Population has never been the point of contention. It's land.

Israel and Hamas have agreed to release Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees:

Families and friends of hostages have been pushing the Israeli government to secure their release. (AP: Ariel Schalit)

Former SEAL hostage negotiator, Dan O'Shea said a month ago that Hamas were not to be trusted in negotiations.

News Nation

Today, Dan O'Shea told ABC News Australia that he said this is a complicated negotiation and he would not believe anything has been achieved until he actually witnesses freed hostages.

“We’re not dealing with two state players that will play according to laws of ongoing conflict. Hamas themselves, they grabbed 240 hostages, largely non-combatants, largely civilians.

“And we have reports that many of these hostages are elderly people in their 80s, and as young as three months old. So that right there tells you’re not playing with an honest player. And that’s what complicates this.”

President Biden was a little less pessimistic.

PBS News Hour

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmrIfeWqNZs

But he warned "Nothing is done until it is done".

Nick Schifrin, PBS Foreign Affairs and Defense Correspondent, made an interesting observation. When asked why this hostage negotiation was so difficult, he said that whilst Hamas hold the majority of the hostages, some are held by Islamic Jihad, and he said others are simply held by private Palestinian civilians.

According to John Lyons from ABC Australia, once the 5 day ceasefire starts, 10 Israeli hostages will be released per day by Hamas and Israel will release 30 Palestinian detainees per day.

ABC News Australia

Benjamin Netanyahu talked about what happens after the ceasefire:

"We are at War. We will continue to fight until we have reached all of our goals".

IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus talked to NBC News about the hostage situation

NBC News

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkGK0ENg_qU

Jonathan has been very forthright and accurate with his discussion and analysis of the War so far in Gaza.

Prime Minister of Jordan, Bisher Khasawneh, said any attempts to expel Palestinians from the West Bank across the Jordan River would be a "declaration of war".

https://news.yahoo.com/jordan-says-beefs-army-presence-220107172.html

Amazing things about the Palestinians' Muslim neighbours. No one wants them.

Jordan will not take one West Bank refugee.

Egypt will not even take one Gazan refugee unless it is a premature baby from the al-Shifa Hospital.

There is a duplicitous side to the Muslim brotherhood towards Gazans. Happy to chant on Al Jazeera and CNN for you, but don't come to our country for help when you need it most.

The US should step up and put pressure on these two countries to do more to help with the situation in Gaza. The US gives $1Bn to each country on an annual basis, and basically get nothing in return.

It's more to do with the fact that I don't think they want expelled people with a grudge against Israel inside their country. And the US gives far more to Israel for not much either.

Because they don't want ethnic cleansing? Because they don't want millions of innocent people to be forced from their homes into the desert?

If their was even a remote possiablity that Jordan and Egypt would accept this, Netanyahu would depopulate the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Am I exaggerating? Maybe, but there are people in the current Israeli cabinet pushing for just this

As I said in another thread, this is good news for Biden:

Quote
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier Tuesday that he had spoken to President Biden in recent days and asked him to help improve the deal. "It was improved so that it will include more hostages for a lower cost," Netanyahu said. "President Biden helped and I thank him for that."
