Hi,

I'm Colin I run Redistricter, I came across this page on Google and thought I should pop in.

Let me know if you have any questions or recommendations for Redistricter and I'll get back to you, although you should probably contact me via email or Twitter for a faster response.

Thanks!

Thanks for letting me know, I've added a disclaimer to that dataset. Thanks.

That's a good idea. I'll add it to my to-do list.

I've added some new features in the past couple weeks:
  • A tool to build custom elections from demographics
  • An election shifter tool
  • A 2024 and 2028 guess dataset
  • 2023 Kentucky data
  • And city select

I tried to include links to this stuff but apparently I don't have enough posts for that

You can make maps like this instantly in Redistricter (no GIS required!)

Ohio: Issue 1 & Issue 2 from the November 2023 election
Utah: 2012 & 5 statewide races from 2016
Washington: 8 statewide races from 2016

One feature that could be nice is the ability to compare turnout between elections.

That's a good idea. I'll add it to my feature to-dos 👍

I wish they displayed median household income and housing costs data instead of an average.

That said, the demographic data is mostly excellent.

Unfortunately true medians won't work because I have to dissagregate and reaggregate the data. Besides, it wouldn't be possible to accurately add medians up to calculate district stats.

I've added 2000 election data to West Virginia and Virginia. Also currently working on some code to add precinct splitting to the city select tool and imported maps

Imported maps now split precincts automatically, so imported districts are now accurate to the census-block level. It can even handle maps with hundreds/thousands of precinct splits without any performance issues.

I've added preset maps to Redistricter for every state's congressional districts used in 2020, 2022, and 2024.

To access them open the map browser and select "Use official map"

I've added 2000-2020 income data to Redistricter for commercial-tier subscribers as well as a dataset for showing change in income over time.

Also for subscribers on the commercial plan there's now an option to download district data as a CSV rather than a geojson shapefile.

Redistricter is now the first and only place to get precinct-level 2022 Nevada election data!

Over time it has gotten much faster. How much faster depends on what time you're comparing it to and what specifically you're using Redistricter for but overall yes it has been and continues to become more performant.

Is redistricter better optimized/does it run faster? I love it but one of the reasons I didn't renew it was that is was very slow, laggy and prone to crashing on chrome.

That’s definitely the biggest downside vs. DRA. It works better on a fast computer (obviously), but there’s also some tricks. I’ve found that selecting precincts via the box tool causes way less lag than individually clicking or using the brush. The only state where I have crashing is California, but that’s slow af on DRA as well.

California is unfortunately quite massive so making it performant will always be a big challenge.

Usually it's RAM. More RAM = faster performance typically since that's where all of the data is loaded to from the browser.

I've added two new map modes for visualizing methods of commute  and jobs by industry

I've also switched most demographics map modes to a purple-yellow palette, instead of the previous black and white. And finally I made some minor adjustments to the ancestries color palette so colors don't repeat for different groups.
